Troy Townsend, Head of Player Engagement at Kick It Out: “It is disappointing to see the final weekend of the Premier League season, with fans back in stadiums, marred by incidents of abuse. The racial abuse targeted at Rio Ferdinand is unacceptable and we hope the Wolves fan who racially abused him faces serious consequences for his actions, as well as the appropriate education.

We are also extremely disappointed by those fans who chose to boo players taking the knee, which again despite conversations and awareness raised, showed a lack of appreciation and understanding. But, we must also give credit to the many who acknowledged the stance with rapturous applause.

These incidents show there is more work to be done ahead of next season, and we will continue to hold everyone in the game to account to drive out discrimination.”
