[International] Udinese defender Danilo sentenced to a year in jail for racist abuse

Friday 11 Jan 2013

Udinese defender Danilo has been found guilty of racist abuse and sentenced to a year in prison by a court in his native Brazil.

Danilo, 28, was on trial after being caught by a TV camera spitting in the face of Atletico Paranaense player Manoel and calling him "macaco" - "monkey" in Portuguese - when playing for Palmeiras in 2010. He later admitted that he offended and spat at Manoel, who reported the matter to the police straight after the game.

It is expected that the punishment, handed out by the Sao Paolo Criminal Court, will be reduced to a fine on appeal.
