Kick It Out ambassador Luther Blissett is taking his Celebrity United side to Leamington Spa for a charity match to raise funds for projects in northern India.
The match will take place on Sunday 9th August between local side Leamington United For BKIT and Luther's celebrity team.
Leamington United for BKIT is a multicultural team football team representing the diverse communities of Leamington Spa and surrounding areas.
Proceeds from the match will be donated to the Buwan Kothi International Trust.
The Buwan Kothi International Trust was formed in March 2006 to raise funds for projects in Haryana in northern India, aimed at rural regeneration and building closer ties with rural communities in the state. Its Trustees are based in Leamington Spa and London.
'Fundamental'
Luther Blissett explained how his celebrity side got involved in the event: "The fundamental core behind Celebrity United is to raise money for good causes. It's done in the spirit of fun using football to do some good for a range of causes.
"We've got backers from across the celebrity spectrum. People like Les Ferdinand, Darren Campbell, Harvey and DJ Spoony have all taken part in previous games.
"We've played against teams from all walks of life and varying levels of talent. The game itself is secondary, it's all about the enjoyment we get out of it and raising funds for some crucial causes in the process."
The Trust's major project has been to raise over £120,000 for the successful construction of a primary school near the village of Buwan Kothi, which currently has 250 pupils and is named in memory of one of the founding trustees, Gilly Mundy, who died suddenly in March 2007 aged only 36.
Inspiration
Gilly grew up in Leamington Spa and his brothers and father, local councillor Mota Singh, live locally.
His wedding to Debbie Quargnolo in Haryana in December 2005 provided the inspiration for the establishment of the Trust and the Gilly Mundy Memorial Community School provides both a fitting tribute to his memory and a a real opportunity for rural children to receive a quality education.
The Trust is currently raising funds for the first local Community Resource Centre in the district surrounding Buwan Kothi, which will extend access to education for adults and provide urgently needed health services.
The match takes place on Sunday 9th August from 2pm to 6pm at Leamington FC, New Windmill Ground, Harbury Lane, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, CV33 9JR
