Walsall and Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Clayton Ince
Clayton Ince is the most-capped Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper of all time, and has made over a hundred appearances for his club side, Walsall.
Clayton. You began your career as a defender before switching to goalkeeper. What are the different qualities needed for each?
I think it’s more about the two positions having similar qualities such as concentration, consistency and being positive.
You were born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. Can you describe the culture and way of life there? Does it differ to the UK?
The culture is very different. The Caribbean is very laid back and also the weather is a lot better! Because people spend so much time outdoors, they are always talking and socialising with their neighbours which makes for a tight knit community. I love living in England but it is a different way of life. Not better, not worse, just different.
You played for Wrexham during a time when its fans tried to buy the club. How important are football fans to our game?
Very. They are the most important aspect of football. They make players who they are and the fans in the UK are so passionate about their sport.
A lot of disabled fans talk about the enormous sacrifices they make to get to games, the difficulties they face, from a players perspective what does that mean to you?
It makes you feel very privileged and humble and, because of this, it drives you to give them the performance their support deserves.
Who did you look up to as a child?
My parents, mainly my mom for the way they brought me up. Growing up in the Caribbean, you play all sports – athletics, basketball, football, gymnastics; you name it. My sporting hero was probably Bruce Grobbelaar. He was an excellent keeper who did what he loved with a smile on his face.
Did you ever face discrimination as a youngster?
Never.
What was the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Be the best you can be. Work hard and be dedicated.
