A Gillingham school joins the weeks of action

The involvement of schools is an important element of the One Game, One Community weeks of action.

In previous years, the weeks have provided an opening within the classroom for teachers to use the medium of football to teach important messages relating to anti-racism, roles and responsibilities and aspects of the citizenship curriculum.

It is a time when teachers are being creative and using the appeal of the game to capture the imagination of the young people they are working with.

Previously, the weeks have coincided with Black History Month, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the festival of Eid Al-Fitr, and the Sikh and Hindu festival of light, Diwali. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness around different religious festivals that are now celebrated across the UK.

There are many ways that schools can get involved in the weeks of action.  These include:

> Organise a youth conference to discuss issues of racism and diversity
> Bring in artists, poets or writers in residence to explore anti- racism themes
> Organise an assembly to look at different faiths and religions
> Organise a 'twinning' event with another school in your area that has a different ethnic make up to your own
> Invite a player from your local club to attend an event
> Devise and display your own exhibition about black footballers who have made an important contribution to your local team.
> Entering the national secondary schools' competition

Don't forget! Kick It Out is here to help, so if you need any help in contacting local clubs or partner organisations in the area please contact us.
